Launceston

We had a pleasant day walking around Launceston and up to Cataract Gorge. Cataract Gorge is promoted in Launceston as the “nation's most alluring urban reserve” and is one of city’s signature attractions. Only a few minutes walk from the city the gorge has been carved by the South Esk River, which we first encountered as a small river near Fingal a few days ago. It is a very pleasant walk and once away from the road it is hard to believe you are in a busy city.

It is a very popular swimming area and we were amazed by the boys jumping from the cliffs and Kings Bridge that is at the mouth of the gorge. One of the locals told us that jumping from Kings Bridge was a long standing tradition in Launceston dating back to when the bridge was opened in 1867.
