Queenstown – Unscheduled bike maintenance

On Friday as we rode to Queenstown I dropped my chain and after that my gears kept slipping – not a good thing to happen when you are climbing hills. Mark made some adjustments beside the road but the slipping did not completely stop. So we have stopped in Queenstown to fix my gears and service the bikes rather than being forced to do running repairs on the side of the road somewhere. Mark’s chain has worn and needs replacing so he will do this while we are here too.

After much fiddling Mark decided to replace my rear derailleur with the spare we have been carrying. My gears are now shifting correctly but the big test will be when we climb out of Queenstown on Monday. As it turned out our decision to stop and service the bikes was the correct one to make as we also discovered a frayed gear cable on Mark’s bike.

We will spend our Sunday afternoon wondering around Queenstown. We have spent time here before when we were working for one of the local authorities in 2007 so there are a few things we missed for us to still look at.

Zoom into the map and use the 'Satellite' layer to see our new location.
