Willare Bridge Roadhouse to Roebuck Plains Roadhouse

During the night we were disturbed by strange snuffly snorting sounds. Mark poked his head outside the door to be eye to eye with a cow with very large horns, grazing amongst our thongs on our tent’s doorstep. The snorting sound came from when it pushed its nose into the ground to take a mouthful of grass. It ignored Mark’s “polite” requests to move on, so Mark retreated back into the tent.

The morning was reasonably cool – cool enough for me to wear a jumper during breakfast. However, the day was to quickly warm up.

We left Willare at 8am and stopped to take photos at the bridge over the Fitzroy River. The water was so clear you could see fish swimming below.

Before morning teatime we stopped to examine the wheel on Mark’s trailer. It had been making a strange noise and when we had a look at it, it appeared to have a damaged tyre. The tube was still inflated so we decided to ride on to Nillbubbica Rest Area for morning tea and change the tyre in the shade of the picnic shelter.

The country we travelled through today was a mix of flood plains and what looked like old sand dunes that we climbed over.

About 27km from Roebuck Plains Roadhouse we found ourselves riding from the dry air of the desert into a wall of humid air blowing in from the coast.  The westerly winds also picked up which cooled things down but slowed our progress. We arrived at the roadhouse on sunset at 5.40pm.

Because it was still warm, we decided to pitch the tent without the fly, but by the time we returned from having dinner at the roadhouse, dew had fallen and our tent was damp, so we hurriedly put the fly on. We haven’t had dew since we left the east coast in Queensland.

Zoom into the map and use the 'Satellite' layer to see our new location.
