Dunmarra Wayside Inn to Daly Waters

Another short day and another late start. We stopped for a short break at the Daly Waters Roadhouse that is approximately 7 km from the Daly Waters Pub our destination for the night.

As we took some photos of our bikes next to some road trains we were complemented by a caravan driver on our visibility on the road. Apparently our red flashing tail lights, 3 per bike, break through the heat haze a long time before our high visibility shirts and then the yellow and orange trailers come into view. We have been using these lights during the day since we left Sydney in the rain and continually get positive feedback from the other road users. Apparently we are known on the CB radio network as the yellow cyclists with the bright flashing red lights. (We have even seen other cyclists we pass purchase a rear light for day time use themselves).  As we arrived at the Daly Waters Pub we received another similar comment about the lights

We had booked a cabin at the pub but it was not ready when we arrived so we sat down in the shade to prepare some lunch. As we did we were approached by Peter and Barbara “the cycling couple from Batemans Bay” that we had heard about at Newcastle Waters. Really from Moruya, they have been on the road for 11 months cycling through Victoria, Tasmania, NSW, Queensland and now the Northern Territory. Both in their early 60s they have been taking a very relaxed ride north only travelling 50-60km a day before retiring to read a book in the shade of a tree in the afternoon. They decided to do the trip after Peter had a heart attack a few years ago, planning to take 2 years to complete the journey “summering over” in Darwin. Perhaps one of the more impressive sides of their story is that Barbara only started riding a bicycle 6 months before they left.

We had dinner at the pub and enjoyed the night’s entertainment from Frank Turton with his Wedged Tailed Eagle chicks, really bantam chickens.

Zoom into the map and use the 'Satellite' layer to see our new location.

We parked our bikes next to this cattle road train. It makes us feel very small.
